Soft Sugar Cookies

Deliciously soft sugar cookies that melt in your mouth, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3–4 tablespoons milk (as needed)
  • Colored sugar or sprinkles for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat together softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add in egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using), and mix until smooth.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing gently until a soft dough forms.
  6. If the dough is too stiff, add milk one tablespoon at a time until the desired consistency is reached.
  7. Scoop tablespoon-sized balls of dough and place on prepared baking sheet, flattening slightly.
  8. Sprinkle colored sugar or sprinkles on top before baking.
  9. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are barely golden.
  10. Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For extra softness, chill the dough for at least 30 minutes before baking. You can also experiment with flavors by adding chocolate chips or dried fruit.
