Rustic Spiced Baked Apple Tart

A delightful dessert that beautifully wraps warm spiced apples in flaky puff pastry, perfect for autumn gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed
  • 4 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, diced
  • 1 beaten egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the thawed puff pastry into a 12-inch square and transfer it to the prepared baking sheet, ensuring it fits nicely and has no tears.
  3. In a bowl, combine the sliced apples, brown sugar, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, salt, and lemon juice. Toss everything to create a deliciously aromatic apple filling.
  4. Spoon the apple filling onto the pastry, leaving a 2-inch border all around.
  5. Fold the edges of the pastry over the apple filling, creating a rustic border, and dot with diced butter for added richness.
  6. Brush the edges of the pastry with the beaten egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired for a crunchy finish.
  7. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  8. Allow it to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving, ensuring the flavors meld together beautifully.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding vanilla extract or a splash of apple juice. Experiment with spices like allspice or cardamom. To achieve a crispier crust, par-bake the puff pastry for 5-7 minutes before adding the filling.
