Classic Yule Log

A delightful rolled chocolate cake adorned with chocolate ganache, perfect for holiday celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (for ganache)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate (chopped)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a jelly roll pan by lining it with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the eggs using a whisk until frothy. Add the melted butter and vanilla extract, stirring until smooth.
  4. Carefully fold the dry mixture into the egg mixture until just combined.
  5. Pour the cake batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly with a spatula.
  6. Bake for 12–15 minutes, until the cake springs back when touched.
  7. Flip the cake onto a powdered sugar-dusted towel. Roll it tightly while still warm.
  8. For the ganache, heat heavy cream until simmering, then pour it over chopped chocolate. Let sit for 2 minutes before stirring until smooth.
  9. Gently unroll the cooled cake. Spread the ganache generously over the surface.
  10. Carefully roll the cake up again. Chill for at least an hour. Before serving, slice and dust with powdered sugar.

Notes

Avoid overbaking to prevent drying out. Consider filling with whipped cream or berries for extra flavor.
